Canon Reveals Steady growth in MFDS and Laser Printers

Canon Inc. announced its financial results for the second quarter of 2015 (2Q 2015).
Net sales of JPY ¥974.4 billion(USD $7.9 billion)shows an increase of 5.1%, compared to the same period last year, while net sales for the six months ending on June 30, 2015 totaled JPY¥1,831.9 billion(USD &14.8 billion), a year-on-year increase of 2.0%.Gross profit, which represented 51.7% of sales, increased 4.2% year-to-year (YTY) to JPY ¥503.8 billion(USD $4.1 billion). The gross profit ratio remained at a high level due to highly profitable new products and ongoing cost-cutting activities. Operating profit declined by 5.3% YTY to JPY ¥104.7 billion(USD $847.6 million), as operating expenses increased 7.0% year on year to JPY ¥399.1 billion(USD $3.2billion). In the second quarter, Net income was JPY ¥68.2 billion (USD $552 million), down 15.7% compared to the same period last year.
Other income (deductions) saw a decline of JPY ¥7.9 billion (USD $64 million), resulting in a year-on-year decline in income before income taxes of 11.7% to JPY ¥103.2 billion (USD $835 million) and a decrease in net income attributable to Canon Inc. of 15.7% to ¥68.2 billion (USD $552 million). Operating profit for the first half of the year decreased by 11.5% to ¥170.9 billion (USD $1.4 billion) while income before income tax decreased by 16.1% to ¥164.5 billion (USD $1.3 billion) whilst first-half net income attributable to Canon Inc. decreased by 20.5% to ¥102.1 billion(USD $827 million).
Results regarding market segments indicated that office multifunction devices (MFDs) and laser printers continued to show strong demand, particularly for color models. Despite the steadily growing demand for color models, total sales volume for laser printer decreased due to weak sales of monochrome models. As a result, sales for Office business unit totaled JPY ¥537.0 billion (USD $4.3 million), up 2.8% year-on-year, while operating profit for the unit declined of 9.9% to JPY ¥79.4 billion (USD $643 million), due to the increase in R&D and other expenses.
Forecasts for the third quarter indicates that demand for MFDs (color models in particular) and color multifunction models in the laser printer market continue to expand. Considering the weak market conditions in Southeast Asia countries, inkjet printers, as indicated, will see a year-on-year decline in sales.

Hewlett Packard Sued for False Advertising

A customer named Anne Wolf has sued Hewlett Packard as its printers don't operate as advertised, according to legalnewsline.com.
Wolf accordingly filed the lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California on June 22. The plaintiff tried to prevent HP from advertising that its printers have a “HP Smart Install” feature, which has been used by HP to advertise that its printers can automatically download software from the Internet. The plaintiff explained, “On the outside of the boxes of these printers, there is a statement assuring customers that these printers will be easy to install because of the inclusion of the HP Smart Install feature”.
Further, Wolf seeks class action status for the customers who purchased the printers expecting the “HP Smart Install” function. She also seeks damages of more than US$5 million, plus court costs.

UK Banks Send Out Nearly 40,000 Tons of Paper Every Year

Banking customers in UK receive more than 1.2 billion (almost 40,000 tons) paper communications from their bank every year, including letters and statements, according to intelligentenvironments.com.

As reported, an online poll of 2,000 British revealed that although two thirds of people (65%) have a digital bank account, more than three quarters (79.5%) still opt in to receive additional paper statements and two thirds (66%) explain they still need the paper for identification purposes.

The reporter believed customers to use online paperless banking is not only environmentally friendly but also could save UK banks £243 million (US$371 million) on stationery expenses. It calling on banks to step up their communications efforts to improve customer awareness of going paperless.

David Webber, Managing Director of Intelligent Environments, supported the calling and noted, “Incentives should also be considered for those that decide to make the shift to paperless. Our research shows that 37% of consumers would be more likely to use digital banking or go paperless if their bank offered a financial incentive.”

Court Decision Favors 123inkt against Samsung, Again

123inkt.nl, the Netherlands-based webshop for toner and ink cartridges, won the appeal in its patent dispute with Samsung.
123inkt.nl was accused of breaching Samsung’s patent EP-2397914-B1 (EP914) with the use of aftermarket chips it used in its range of aftermarket Samsung laser printer cartridges. In a judgement at the District Court at The Hague, dated 30th October 2014, the court ruled in favor of 123inkt.nl.
Samsung filed an appeal. However, all claims of Samsung were rejected by the Hague Court of Appeal again. During the trial, the court found the patent of Samsung non-inventive and there is a high probability the patent will be invalidated.
Gerben Kreuning, Director of 123inkt.nl, is pleased with the result of the lawsuit, as the company could continue to sell its own brand toners for Samsung printers. He is glad that the court has ruled on two occasions in favor of 123inkt.nl. He believes Samsung’s patent on the chip is not inventive and it is being used as a means of enforcing a monopoly on the sale of after-market toners.

IDC Finds OEM Vendors Pulling Share from Third Party Vendors for Ink Cartridges in Asia/Pacific

Singapore and Hong Kong, March 12, 2015 – IDC finds printer consumable market in the Asia/Pacific excluding Japan (APEJ) region declined 0.5% sequentially but increased 4.0% year-on-year to reach US$1,729.65 million in Q4 2014.

Out of the total consumable market, third party brands contribute nearly US$392 million, which is approximately 23% of the total value. The Asia/Pacific market is witnessing decline in shipment of ink cartridges and as a result revenue of ink cartridges has declined as well. However, laser toner market still recorded growth in revenue.

"Looking at the inkjet space, OEM vendors have launched inkjet hardcopy peripherals (HCPs) which offer more page yield at low cost of print per page (CPP). This strategy has helped OEM vendors as low priced original ink made third party ink products a less attractive option. As a result, the overall shipment and share of third party products has declined. However, this strategy has also affected ink revenue of OEM vendors as high yield ink cartridges are economic as compare to standard cartridges," says Pankaj Chawla, Research Manager for IPDS Research at IDC Asia/Pacific.

In the laser space, overall market continues to record growth, but this growth is driven by third party vendors. In the recent time OEMs have increasingly focused on Asia/Pacific market and recorded growth in shipment of HCPs, which has catalyzed the growth of installed base of HCPs. But this growth in installed base didn't help OEMs as price sensitive SMBs and SOHOs prefer economic third party products over high priced original toners.

Moving forward, IDC believes that laser toner market will witness intense competition between OEM and third party products. Though OEMs are losing share as a part of total unit shipment, their share in revenue is still over 60%. Third party vendors are focusing on growing their revenue by launching high end products (color toners, high speed HCPs). Third party vendor are also changing packaging of their products to target developed market and quality cautious commercial enterprises. These better packaged products are also helping third party vendors to sell their products through modern retail and also through online channels.
